Weathering Winter with Healthy Skin

Dry skin is a condition with a large number of sufferers especially in the harsh winter months. Although it is generally thought of as a harmless condition (since other than its general discomfort it is of no concern to most) it can however, be a sign of a more serious underlying condition requiring attention. Depending on the severity and presentation of your condition it is always wise to seek the care of a health care professional who can rule-in/out the many causes of dry-looking skin –including eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, hypothyroidism, allergic reactions, etc.

With all that said, there are a number of general guidelines that comprise the ABC’s of Skin care:

  1. Consume a healthy, varied, allergen-free diet ensuring adequate & healthy fat intake.
  2. Moisturize regularly with nourishing and protective natural oils (ie. refrain from using any oils/creams on your body that you would NOT consume internally).
  3. Read labels maintaining an allergen-free external environment (use only natural soaps, hygienic and beauty products and keep away from chemical laden personal products).
  4. Consider investing in a humidifier and/or other methods of maintaining a humid home environment (would love to hear your creative & practical humidifying techniques).
  5. Stay hydrated keeping in mind that diuretics (including coffee, caffeinated teas and pops, etc.) cause dehydration requiring increased water intake!
