When a Sleep Aid Triggers Heartburn

">

A patient recently came in with daily acid reflux (GERD) that had been going on for over a month. She found herself relying on Pepcid every day just to keep symptoms under control.

When we went through her health history, we discovered something important: her reflux started soon after she began taking an over-the-counter sleep aid containing diphenhydramine hydrochloride (an antihistamine).

Here’s why that mattered:

  • Antihistamines lower stomach acid levels.

  • Low stomach acid weakens the valve (LES) that normally keeps stomach contents from moving upward.

  • The result: more reflux, not less.

So, although it seems counterintuitive, lowering stomach acid can actually cause heartburn in some people. In this patient’s case, the sleep aid meant to help her rest was actually triggering her reflux.

👉 Takeaway: If you notice new or worsening heartburn after starting a medication—even something over-the-counter—it’s worth checking in with your healthcare provider. Sometimes the “hidden culprit” isn’t what you’d expect.

Here are some Gentle Sleep Support Tips (without the heartburn):

  • Try magnesium or L-theanine in the evening to calm the nervous system.

  • Build a bedtime ritual: dim lights, read a calming book, or stretch gently before bed.

  • Keep screens off for at least 30–60 minutes before sleep.

  • If needed, a very low-dose melatonin can sometimes help reset sleep without the digestive side effects.

  • Remember: the root cause matters. Restless sleep can come from many directions—stress, caffeine or stimulant use, diet mismatched to your hormonal needs, or hormone imbalances themselves. Depending on the cause, the solution will look very different. If sleep is an ongoing concern, it’s not always worth your time or money experimenting with random products. The best approach is to work with a professional who can guide you.
