10 Signs Your Body Needs a Detox

Your body is detoxifying right now. Every second, your liver, kidneys, skin, lungs, and lymphatic system are working to eliminate waste and keep you in balance. This is natural. This is normal. But here’s what I see every day in practice: those systems get overburdened. Toxins accumulate — from food, the environment, stress, and metabolic waste — and your body starts sending signals. Most people brush those signals off, or grab a quick fix from a health food store shelf. I’d encourage you to listen more carefully instead. Here are ten signs your detox systems are asking for support.

1. Your Skin Is Breaking Out

Acne isn’t just a teenage problem. When your liver and gut are overwhelmed, your skin — one of your primary elimination organs — picks up the slack. Recent research confirms what naturopathic medicine has long recognized: acne patients show significantly reduced gut microbial diversity compared to healthy controls, pointing to a disrupted gut-skin axis as a driver of breakouts (PMID 42625577). Your skin is telling you something your bloodwork might be missing.

2. Your Body Odour Has Changed

Unusually strong, sweet, sulphurous, or ammonia-like body odour is a signal from your internal chemistry. When the liver and kidneys can’t fully clear metabolic waste, your skin and breath take over as exit routes. Gut-derived metabolites — including trimethylamine compounds — are a well-studied example of how microbial waste products surface through the body when elimination pathways are congested.

3. You’re Bloated, Constipated, or Uncomfortable After Meals

Digestion is your front-line detox system. If you’re bloated, irregular, or feel heavy after eating, your gastrointestinal tract is not clearing waste effectively. A sluggish colon means toxins are being reabsorbed rather than eliminated. This isn’t just inconvenient — it’s a meaningful signal that your detox pathways need attention.

4. Your Joints Ache Without a Clear Reason

If your joints ache and you don’t have a diagnosis to explain it, consider what’s happening in your gut. Emerging research shows that gut microbiome dysbiosis accelerates joint inflammation through what’s known as the gut-joint axis — where inflammatory compounds cross a permeable gut lining, enter the bloodstream, and reach joint tissue (PMID 40624668). Unexplained joint pain is one of the most underappreciated signs of a high toxic burden.

5. You Feel Heavy and Weighed Down

There’s a quality of energy I ask every patient about that doesn’t show up on any lab test: do you feel light? Is there a spring in your step, or does it feel like you’re wading through mud? A pervasive sense of heaviness — physical and emotional — is often one of the earliest signs that your body’s systems are working overtime just to keep up.

6. You’re Moody, Irritable, or Anxious

The gut-brain connection runs deep. When the gut is inflamed or dysbiotic, neurotransmitter production — including serotonin, roughly 90% of which is made in the gut — becomes disrupted. Mood swings, irritability, and anxiety that feel disproportionate to your circumstances are worth investigating through a detox lens, not just a mental health one.

7. You Can’t Think Clearly

Difficulty concentrating, forgetting words mid-sentence, feeling mentally slow — this isn’t aging. Neuroinflammation and oxidative stress driven by systemic toxic burden have been directly linked to cognitive impairment and the “brain fog” so many of my patients describe (PMID 39271627). Your brain is exquisitely sensitive to what’s happening in the rest of your body.

8. You’re Exhausted No Matter How Much You Sleep

When your liver is processing a significant backlog of toxins, energy production suffers at the cellular level. This is a different kind of tired. It’s not fixed by an early bedtime. It requires understanding why your body is working so hard just to function.

9. You’re Waking Up Between 1 and 3 AMchinese medicine clock of the organs

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this window is the liver’s peak working hour. Physiologically, the liver performs much of its detoxification work during deep sleep — and when the toxic burden is high, this process can disrupt sleep architecture. Poor sleep and poor detoxification feed each other in a cycle that’s hard to break without addressing the root cause.

10. You Keep Getting Sick

If you catch every cold that passes through or feel like your immune system is perpetually underperforming, your body’s resources may be diverted. A significant toxic burden keeps the immune system in a state of chronic low-grade inflammation — leaving it less capable of mounting a proper defense when you actually need it.

So, What Now?

None of these symptoms exist in isolation. The women I see in practice are often experiencing several of these at once — and they’ve been told their labs are normal. Here’s what I know: normal labs don’t always mean optimal function. If your body is sending these signals, they deserve a thoughtful, individualized response — not a ten-day cleanse from a box.

A naturopathic detox program is built around you — your specific toxic burden, your elimination organs, your history. If you’re ready to understand what’s driving your symptoms rather than simply manage them, I’d love to help.

One More Thing — I Won’t Actually Call It a “Detox”

Fair warning: if you come to see me with these symptoms, I’m going to help you address them — but I probably won’t use the word “detox” once during your appointment.

Here’s why. Your body is already detoxifying. Right now, as you read this. It’s not something we switch on — it’s something that runs continuously through your liver, kidneys, gut, lymphatic system, skin, and lungs, every single second of your life. So when I sit down with you and we start looking at why your skin is breaking out, why your joints ache, why the mental clarity you used to have has gone quiet — what I’m really doing is assessing each of those elimination pathways and asking: where is the flow restricted? Where is the system overburdened? What does this person’s body specifically need to do this job better?

Calling that a “detox” honestly feels a little… flat. A little unscientific. A little too close to the boxed cleanse I’ve been gently discouraging you from buying. What I’m doing is working with your physiology — supporting phase one and phase two liver detoxification, restoring gut integrity, reducing the inflammatory burden on your joints and your brain, optimizing your lymphatic and urinary clearance. It’s precise. It’s individualized. It’s deeply clinical.

Is it technically detoxification? Absolutely. But it is so much more than that.
